Reduced service, September 2026. The Institute remains open and its collections, card indexes and correspondence are in order, but it works at the minimum compatible with the care of the material and with obligations already entered into. The reading room opens on Wednesday and Thursday, 10.00–15.30 and by written appointment only; three posts stand vacant and may not be filled; no colloquium is being held this year; and three works are complete and unprinted for want of the printing budget. The reasons are set out under History of the Institute. These pages are revised twice a year, in March and September.

This page gives the particulars required of a public institution maintaining a website, and states the limits within which what is published here may be relied on. The wording follows the letter received from the ministry in October 2024 (archive, Akt 33/5); the earlier version of 2011, which spoke of an "Internet service provider", is no longer used.

1. Who is responsible for this site

2. What the content is, and what it is not

Everything here describes the Institute and its holdings as they stand at the date of the last revision shown on each page. The Institute takes care to be accurate but does not thereby give a warranty. In particular:

• Scholarly statements. Dates, attributions of objects, identifications of scribes and the like are research conclusions. Their degree of certainty is marked, as the data rules require, by the words "about", "probably" or "not determinable". Any such conclusion may be revised in the light of new material.
• Provisional figures. The figures on the home page and on the research data page are working figures, corrected twice a year, in March and September, and may differ from the final figures in the published annual report. Please state the date on which you took them.
• No authentication. Nothing here is an authentication of an object, a valuation, or evidence usable in a sale. The Institute does not authenticate for commercial purposes, as the rules of use explain.
• No legal or conservation advice. What is said here about conservation materials and methods is a record of the Institute's own experience. It is not advice on the treatment of a particular object; consult a public conservation service before treating anything.

This site contains no external links. Every link on every page leads to another page of this site. Other institutions, publications and places mentioned in the text are named in words only. There are two reasons for this. Addresses elsewhere change, and the Institute has nobody to check them every quarter; a dead link is worse than no link. And the Institute does not exchange links with commercial bodies. To find an institution or a book mentioned here, use the catalogue of a library or the finding aids of an archive.

Should a joint project ever make an outside address necessary, it will be marked in the text as an external address, with the date on which it was last checked. Anything not so marked is a link within this site.

5. Data protection

The Institute follows the general rules for data processing in public institutions. As to this website:

• No personal data are collected here. The pages are static. There is no form, no search box, no comment facility and no subscription.
• No cookies, no analytics, no embedded material from elsewhere. There is no statistical code, no advertising code and no social media code on any page.
• Access log. The Institute's server records, in the ordinary course of running a web server, the time of a request, the page requested and the address it came from. The record is overwritten after fourteen days. It is not used to identify anyone and is not given to anybody else. This is a standard function of the server software and cannot be switched off; anyone with a question about it is welcome to write.
• Personal data in correspondence. Names, addresses and contact details given in a letter or in arranging a visit are used only to answer that enquiry and to record the consultation; they are not used for anything else and are not added to a mailing list. Correspondence is kept, and closed to consultation, as section 4.6 of the rules of use provides.
• No personal data are passed to third parties, except where the law requires it.

6. Limitation of liability

The Institute takes reasonable care that what is published here is accurate, complete and current. It accepts no liability for loss arising from the use of these pages, except where the loss is caused by intent or gross negligence. It accepts no liability for a period in which the site cannot be reached through technical failure, interruption of a connection, maintenance or circumstances outside its control, but will restore service as quickly as it can.

Pages written at different times use different words for the same thing — a research division was called a "group" in pages written between 1996 and 2011, for example. The Institute does not rewrite the older pages to make them uniform. If you find something wrong, please write to the academic office; it will be corrected at the next revision and the date of the correction noted on the page.
