Reduced service, September 2026. The Institute remains open and its collections, card indexes and correspondence are in order, but it works at the minimum compatible with the care of the material and with obligations already entered into. The reading room opens on Wednesday and Thursday, 10.00–15.30 and by written appointment only; three posts stand vacant and may not be filled; no colloquium is being held this year; and three works are complete and unprinted for want of the printing budget. The reasons are set out under History of the Institute. These pages are revised twice a year, in March and September.

The series: Wolfenbütteler Studien zu Urkunde und Schrift Schriftenreihe des Instituts

The Institute's series was founded in 1989 and is published with an academic publisher elsewhere; a volume appears in most years, and thirty-six had appeared by 2024. It carries four kinds of work — monographs, editions, catalogues and proceedings of the colloquia. Small collections of material and working notes go instead into the source booklets or into supplements to the Mitteilungen, which are listed under Editions and source booklets and Annual reports.

Buying the series. The volumes are issued by the publisher, not by the Institute. The Institute does not sell them and there is no order form on this site. Copies may be had through a bookseller or through a library's acquisitions department. The Institute keeps two sets, one for its staff to borrow and one for consultation in the reference library; these are not lent out, and single volumes are not broken up for copying. Volumes that are out of print may be applied for as single articles under section 4.4 of the rules of use.

On fascicle 5: the material it would have covered, Bremen and Stade, was assigned when the catalogue was planned in 1989 to fascicle 7, so the number 5 stands vacant. The catalogue of publications (volume 16) already notes this, and the Institute does not renumber volumes to make the sequence look tidy. The three volumes in preparation from number 37 onwards are listed under Editions and source booklets.

4. Submitting a manuscript

The series carries chiefly the work of the Institute's divisions, but accepts work from outside and joint work. The procedure is this.

  1. What fits. Monographs, editions, catalogues and proceedings in the Institute's four fields — numismatics, diplomatics, documentary editing, and the study of writing and manuscripts. A collection of source material of less than five sheets is better offered to the source booklets.
  2. Form. German or English, two copies on paper with an electronic text; plates must come with images of the originals and a note of how they were captured — resolution, lighting, whether cropped. A catalogue submitted as an electronic text without the plate material is not accepted.
  3. Reading. Division III appoints two referees, one of whom must not belong to the Institute, who report in writing; the publications committee then decides. Three months is usual, six for a catalogue.
  4. If declined. A written report is sent. Manuscript and plates are returned; the Institute keeps no copy, though the reports and the author's replies are filed for twenty years.
  5. Proofs. The author reads two sets. After the second, only misprints are accepted, so that the printing is not delayed.
  6. Terms. The publisher issues the series and royalties follow the agreement between publisher and Institute. The Institute pays no fee, but the author may buy ten copies at sixty per cent of the published price.

Manuscripts go to the academic office, sekretariat [at] winddew.lab, marked "for the series". The Institute is too small to answer enquiries about the progress of a manuscript by telephone; the result of the reading is sent in writing, with the date and the referees' code numbers.
